Traffic Marking
Graphics & Road Films
Preformed adhesive traffic marking graphics in anti-skid R10 and R11 rated road-grade film — manufactured in white, yellow, red, green, blue, and retroreflective face options, with screen-print and digital UV legend capability to IRC:35, TRL, and custom authority specification — for road lane arrows, pedestrian crossings, cycle lane markings, bus lane graphics, car park bay marking, warehouse aisle delineation, airport apron markings, and school zone safety graphics across highway authority, local authority, OEM, and infrastructure contractor supply.
Preformed graphic film puts complex symbols on the road exactly as designed — every time.
Road paint applied through stencils produces markings whose quality depends entirely on the condition of the stencil, the skill of the operator, the viscosity of the paint on the day, and the texture of the road surface. A preformed adhesive graphic film is manufactured under controlled conditions to exact dimensional tolerances — the arrow geometry, the letter spacing, the symbol proportions — and applied to the road surface as a finished, accurate component. No stencil drift, no paint bleed, no thin coverage over road texture. The marking on the road is the marking that was specified.
Coloured lane markings — red, green, blue — cannot be reliably achieved with road paint.
Cycle lane red, bus lane red, and shared-path green are specified colours in IRC:35 and local authority road marking schedules that road paint cannot reproduce consistently or maintain under traffic wear. Preformed traffic graphic film manufactured in the correct colour to the specified BS 381C or RAL traffic colour reference holds that colour for the rated service life of the film — not for the few months before UV bleaching and tyre abrasion return it to a pale approximation of the original specification. Retroreflective face film available in all standard traffic colours for night-readable coloured lane markings in unlit environments.
Installation time on a live road surface is a safety and cost variable — preformed film minimises it.
Road paint requires a road closure for application and a further closure or lane restriction during the curing period — typically 30 to 90 minutes depending on ambient temperature and humidity. Hot-applied thermoplastic requires a road closure for application equipment and cooling time. Preformed adhesive graphic film is a peel-and-stick installation: remove the split liner, position the graphic using the pre-marked installation tabs, roll out the air channels, and the road is open. For night-time works windows, urgent hazard marking, and time-critical project completions, the difference between a two-hour closure and a twenty-minute installation matters.
Marking Methods
Why Preformed Film Wins on Complex Markings
Road paint for line work and large areas. Thermoplastic for permanent high-durability lane lines on new construction. Preformed adhesive graphic film for any marking that requires accurate geometry, full colour, complex symbols, retroreflectivity, or fast installation on an existing road surface. Tell us the application and traffic loading — we'll specify the correct product.
| Property | Road Paint | Thermoplastic | Preformed Graphic Film |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best For | New road construction, large-area line marking | High-durability permanent road markings | Temporary, complex symbols, coloured lanes, overlays |
| Method | Spray or brush-applied liquid road paint | Hot-applied thermoplastic compound | Adhesive-backed preformed graphic film |
| Complex Symbols | Requires stencil; variable quality | Pre-formed; limited colour range | Full colour; any geometry; print-accurate |
| Coloured Surfaces | Limited; overpaint fades quickly | Limited colour palette available | Red, green, blue, yellow — full traffic palette |
| Installation | Road closure required; curing time | Heat application; road closure required | Peel-and-stick; minimal road closure time |
| Durability (Urban Road) | 6 months – 2 years | 3 – 7 years | 3 – 7 years (traffic grade PSA + anti-skid) |
Construction
Engineered Layer by Layer
Eight material and processing layers — from split-liner installation tab through road-grade PSA, conformable carrier film, dimensional stability scrim, colour or retroreflective face, printed legend, UV topcoat, and anti-skid aggregate surface — engineered to bond permanently to road surfaces, resist tyre abrasion and vehicle crossing loads, and maintain slip resistance and colour accuracy through the rated traffic service life.

Anti-Skid Surface — R10 and R11 Slip Resistance on Wet Road
Traffic marking graphics manufactured with glass bead scatter aggregate deliver R10 wet slip resistance — the minimum required for pedestrian crossing graphics and cycle lane markings under BS 8300 and IRC:35. Aluminium oxide aggregate applied over the face film achieves R11 classification for high-traffic crossing points, bus stop run-out zones, and heavy-vehicle approaches where glass bead aggregate would be abraded to below minimum skid resistance within a single season. Anti-skid performance verified by wet pendulum test before dispatch on production batches for road authority supply.
Retroreflective Face Option for Night-Readable Road Markings
Standard solid-colour traffic marking graphics are visible in daylight and under street lighting. In unlit or poorly lit road environments — rural roads, industrial estate access roads, car park structures, and airport aprons — a retroreflective face film returns vehicle headlamp light directly to the driver, making lane arrows, crossing graphics, and text legends night-readable without additional infrastructure. High-Intensity prismatic retroreflective face film specified to RL ≥ 150 mcd/lx/m² at 0° installation angle per BS EN 1436 / IRC road marking retroreflectivity measurement standard.
Bitumen and Concrete PSA — Permanent Bond on Road Surfaces
Road-grade pressure-sensitive adhesive systems are not the same chemistry as equipment label or vehicle graphic adhesives. Bitumen is a low-energy surface that standard acrylic PSA systems cannot wet out and bond to permanently — the adhesive needs to flow into the surface texture and resist the plasticiser migration from the bitumen binder that progressively contaminates the bond line. Our traffic marking graphics use a 500 µm road-grade PSA formulated specifically for bituminous surfaces, with a separate high-tack concrete-grade variant for carpark structures, warehouse floors, and airport concrete aprons.
IRC, TRL, and Local Authority Specification Supply
Road arrow dimensions, legend letter heights, colour coordinates, and symbol geometry manufactured to IRC:35 (Indian Roads Congress road marking standard), TRL / TSRGD specification for UK local authority supply, and custom project specifications issued by highway authorities. Colour output profiled to BS 381C, RAL, and Pantone traffic colour references — not a generic white or yellow that passes visual inspection but fails spectrophotometric colour measurement under the project specification. Dimensional verification report and colour measurement certificate available for authority submission on contract supply.
