A retroreflective sign is a measured performance specification — not a material finish.
IRC:67 and IS 15058 prescribe minimum retroreflectivity values (RA) for each sign class at defined observation and entrance angles. A sign that does not meet the minimum RA value for its class is non-compliant regardless of how reflective it appears visually in daylight. Highway authority sign procurement, NQM audits, and IRC:67 implementation guidelines all require documented retroreflectivity testing before and after installation — not visual inspection. Supplying to the specification means supplying measured, documented retroreflectivity, not just a film that describes itself as reflective.
Sign class, geometry, and colour are all regulatory — deviation creates liability.
IRC:67 defines exact symbol geometry, border width, colour specification, and font for each sign type. A stop sign that is the wrong size, uses an incorrect red, has a border too narrow, or lacks the correct legend typeface is a non-conforming sign — potentially invalid for highway authority handover and a liability in the event of an accident. We manufacture to drawing and specification rather than to visual approximation. Approval drawings, colour swatches matched to IRC:67 colour references, and retroreflectivity test data are produced for each job and are available for authority handover documentation.

Vinyl-applied lettering on retroreflective sheeting lifts at edges under UV and thermal cycling within two to four years in tropical road environments. Standard inkjet print on white aluminium boards does not retroreflect the legend at all — only the unpainted surround reflects. Correct legend application is screen-printing directly on the retroreflective face stock in UV-stable inks formulated for outdoor sign use, or digital UV flatbed printing on retroreflective substrate for short-run and variable-data requirements. The legend retroreflects back at the driver because the ink layer is formulated not to block the prismatic cell geometry beneath it.

Screen-Print and Digital UV Legend Matching
